"“If I were a rich man …” "

December 28, 2007

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9

Friday, December 28, 2007

“If I had a million dollars…” Have you ever tried to finish that sentence? We have probably all dreamed of being rich at one time or another – from our childhood when we wanted the nicest, biggest toys in the catalog to when we got old enough to gaze longingly into the car showroom or wistfully at the large houses with manicured lawns, we have all dreamed of being rich.

But what does it mean to be wealthy? Average-income Americans, according to a recent study, commonly think that they would be financially secure if they could have a million dollars. But according to the same study, those who already have a million dollars tend to think that they won’t really be secure until they have five million. You guessed it! It goes up from there. Not even the rich always feel rich!

During the Christmas season the distance between rich and poor sometimes seems greater than ever, as some are able to exchange fabulous presents and others have nothing to give
and less to receive. And yet, in Jesus’ birth we learn who is truly wealthy. We see Him in the family of Mary and Joseph where there is little to share. Jesus became poor so that we, by His sacrifice, might become richer than we could imagine.

Our wealth is not like that of the rich people we know, who can never be rich enough to be secure. We are secure forever, because our treasure, our inheritance, is kept for us in heaven.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You know that I desire many things and struggle to know what is best for me. I trust You with the great riches of life that You have given me. Let me enjoy them as You know best. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
