Do you ever look around (discreetly) at church to see who is singing? It’s interesting. Some people don’t sing at all. They often don’t even look at the music. Others move their mouths a bit and appear to be following the words quietly. And some sing with gusto, the kind that tempt you to turn around to see who is singing behind you. Are any of these people singing “a new song”?
It seems a bit odd to sing a psalm written more than 3,000 years ago and yet think that we are singing a new song. But David’s words have nothing to do with the copyright date or the musical style. His song is new because each day God’s blessings are new, and his heart is filled with new love and gratitude.
How new do you feel today? The year is old. Even this season is old; we may be tired of Christmas music and ready to move on. And each day we experience much the same as we experienced yesterday. The same daily bread to be sure, but also the same struggles and temptations, the same disappointments and fears.
How new do you feel today? God’s love for you is new again today. His mercy toward you is fresh this day. God’s forgiveness for you is more than enough again. And His joy over you is filled up to the brim and overflowing. Your heart can sing a new song today.
Prayer: Dear Lord, put Your words into my mouth so that I might sing a new song, the song of Your perfect love, today and every day. In Your name I pray. Amen.
