Monday, December 31, 2007 New Year’s Eve
How many pieces of mail did you get this week advertising “your last chance” to save money? How many ads have you seen that say “only a few more days left”? My favorite advertising phrase appears every year from a local furniture store known for its frequent sales: “Prices will never be this low again!”
As the year 2007 draws to a close, many people will be looking to the future. Most of them hope that the next year will be better than the one now ending. Some will make promises or resolutions to change their behavior in the future, promises that may not even survive tomorrow.
But Jesus’ followers are not worried about the future. We know what the future holds – a life forever with Jesus. And we’re not concerned about the past. We know the past is forgiven and done. We are concerned, like Jesus, with today.
Today is the day God has given us in which to serve Him. Right now is the opportunity He has given us to point others to their Savior. Just as Jesus said, “while I am in the world I am the Light of the world,” so He has also told us that we are lights for our world as well (Matthew 5:14).
Like the advertisements said, we may not have this chance again. Certainly we will not have this day again. Therefore, regardless of the date on the calendar, now is the day for us to proclaim the love Jesus has poured out on us.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You for the days past. They were filled with blessings. I thank You for the unending days ahead. I know You have greater gifts than I can imagine. But I thank You most of all for this day. Use it to Your glory. Amen.
