"Endings and Beginnings"

January 01, 2008

But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Galatians 4:4-5

Tuesday, January 1, 2008 New Year’s Day

Yesterday it felt like we were ending something. Today it feels like we are beginning something. Which one is true?

It is somewhat arbitrary for us to decide where to divide one year from the next, but for the sake of statistics, today is the beginning of a new year. Today all the counters are reset to zero and we begin counting again how many births, how many deaths, how many accidents. The world depends upon special days like this and many hope that when we write a new number for our date, somehow things will change.

Students graduating in 2008 are hoping it marks the beginning of a successful career. Couples getting married in 2008 hope it will begin years of joy. Politicians facing election hope this year will be a turning point in their efforts to change the world. But what do God’s people think of the New Year?

We know that every day is a new beginning. We’re able to start fresh every morning in the forgiveness Jesus has won for us. But we also know that we will not reach our goal until it is God’s time. Just as it was not until God’s “time had fully come” that the Savior was born and God’s promises fulfilled, so it will not be until God’s time is fulfilled and each day He has marked down has been spent, that we will at last reach the goal we eagerly seek, the end of time and the beginning of eternity.

We call our days beginnings or endings according to the numbers we have assigned them. But Jesus is the beginning and the end. He has all our times in His hand.

Prayer: Lord, let today be a new beginning. Let it be the
beginning of my forever with You. Amen.
