"Celebrity Encounters"

December 31, 2008

Isaiah 9:6 - For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

I remember as a youth longing for someone famous to come to our small, rural town in Iowa, someone to break up the monotony of everyday life. Then, while in high school, it happened.

Miss America was going to come to Algona, Iowa, and I, as director of the high school broadcast journalism group, was going to have the opportunity to interview her. I was so excited I did not sleep at all the night before. (After all, this was my chance to become someone.) Through this encounter, I thought my life was going to change.

Now it is 15 years later and I can tell you that my life did not change. I don't even remember the encounter except that it happened. However, Christ encounters me, which makes all the difference.

Christ came into the world to encounter us where we are. He is more than just someone whose vocation is in the limelight. He is our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. He is the one who came to earth to live a life that we could not live. He came to destroy sin forever.

And the story is not over. Christ continues to come to us in His precious body and blood. Through this encounter, our lives will never be the same. Now we are someone-a child of God. We also long for Him to come again and fulfill all that He has promised.

THE PRAYER: Dearest Jesus, there are times in our lives when we focus on little things that do not last. Stir up our hearts to look to Your coming in Holy Communion and worship with renewed anticipation as we joyfully wait for Your return on the last day. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
